Santa Fe Water Filtration Plant

A 467.5 kW array installed on top of a subterranean potable-water reservoir at the Santa Fe, CA water filtration plant. 974 FastRack 510-6dgs carried 850 modules with no penetrations, pile driving, or heavy machinery — part ground mount, part rooftop.

Why this project worked

  • Built directly over a 13-million-gallon potable-water reservoir from the 1970s
  • No pile driving, heavy machinery, or penetrations permitted on site
  • 974 FR510s supporting 850 modules across a bed of drain rock
  • Polymer racking flexes over uneven rock and won't leach or corrode near the water supply

Overview

In its 16-year history, Sollega's FastRack 510 has been deployed across a wide range of flat-roof and ground-mount PV projects. Building an array on top of a subterranean reservoir in Santa Fe, California gave the system its first opportunity to do both at once.

On the surface, the array reads as a straightforward ground mount: 974 FR510s supporting 850 90-inch modules across a wide bed of gravel. The complexity hides underneath. With 13 million gallons of potable water resting in an underground reservoir built in the 1970s, crews could not drive heavy gear onto the site, pile drive, or even bring a truck out to smooth the drain rock without risking the reservoir's sidewalls.

The FR510 was chosen because, as a ballasted flat-roof and ground-mount system, it is purpose-built to reduce or remove penetrations — in this case, both roof and ground. A small team set the array with no heavy machinery or pile driving, the polymer racks flexing to adjust for uneven areas in the drain rock. And unlike metal, the material will not leach or corrode — critical this close to a water supply.
